The Tampa Bay Rays made a career-long commitment to Evan Longoria on Monday, agreeing to a $100 million contract extension that could keep the third baseman under wraps through the 2023 season.
Prior to the deal, Longoria was locked up through the 2016 season. Jay Bruce is also signed through 2016 and has been seeking an extension from theCincinnati Reds, but MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon says the NL Central club is not interested right now.
Bruce is signed a six-year, $51 million extension in 2010, a deal far better than Longoria’s six-year, $17 million deal, so the Reds have no incentive to hold any new talks. The Reds also have handed out long-term deals to Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips and may not in position to discuss another one.
